Internal Healing
Wezile Mgibe is an South African performance artist and his practice centers around performance, film, installation as a tool for social change. Love and Healing are two concepts that are imperative to Wezile Mgibe’s artistic practice; he emphasises his own body in his work and considers his ability to be loved and offer love, which to him is integral to the process of internal healing.
He has an ongoing series of work which seeks to reveal and explore prejudice and concepts behind unwelcoming spaces and the dynamics of reintegration in Southern Africa.
His work confronts prejudices and advocates against social inequality and creates a platform for critical self- reflexivity within unwelcoming spaces.
Mgibe’s work is influenced by how things have come to existence, as well as motivations behind certain movements, reactions, human behaviors, and mostly how these become symbols.
His work confronts prejudices and advocates against social inequality and creates a platform for critical self- reflexivity within unwelcoming spaces.
Mgibe's site-specific projects are developed in a continuous series format in an aim to interrogate the dynamics of site, place and culture. He uses his body as a forgotten angle to reveal ways of existence which to him is integral to the process of internal healing.
The idea behind using his body in various spaces covered with bandages brings back the memory of being home while still carrying the sense of being in exile.
Wezile’s explains, “In my practice, I have been deliberate in highlighting voices, bodies and objects that reflect human behavior, and I have been conscious about my ability to being loved and offering love, which is integral to the process of internal healing.”
“These are the things we all love to treasure, time is precious but you can make one beautiful visual to remind you and echo all those memories. I envision my work as assisting humans to find their voices, despite their marginalization and exclusion from public and social spaces because of their economic status, background, gender, or sexual orientation. “
“I would wish my work to act as an inspiration to people to find hope, courage, and healing, and provide a platform to enable people to share deep feelings, without violating their sense of self or exposing them to further trauma.” Wezile concludes.
